It’s official – Netflix has cancelled Warrior Nun after the show’s second season, shutting down hope for a third season. Season 2 of Warrior Nun briefly reached the #5 spot in Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 list, and news that Warrior Nun has now been cancelled has left the show’s fanbase confused by the cancellation decision for a show with decent support that seemed to be doing alright for itself.
Premiering on Netflix in July 2020, Warrior Nun follows Alba Baptista as Ava Silva, a 19-year-old quadriplegic who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and the ability to walk, thanks to a mysterious artifact embedded in her back. After seizing her second chance at life with both hands, a series of seemingly random mysterious events lead to Ava being introduced to (and indoctrinated into) the Order of the Cruciform Sword, an ancient group of warrior nuns trained to hunt and defeat demons, such as the corrupted angel Adriel (William Miller). Together with Mary (Toya Turner), Lilith (Lorena Andrea), Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young), and Camila (Olivia Declan), Ava is pulled into an ancient battle between good and evil and told that she must prevail – whether she wants to or not.
Why Netflix Cancelled ‘Warrior Nun’
Warrior Nun was renewed for a second season in August 2020, with the eight-episode second season released to Netflix on November 10th, 2022. According to Deadline, the second season of Warrior Nun hit the #5 spot on Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 List for English-language series and spent three weeks on the list in total, having collected a “small yet passionate fanbase” for the show – fans that were probably hoping for a third season, given the show’s success.
Unfortunately, Netflix’s decision to cancel Warrior Nun after season 2 is a choice that’s being reflected in a lot of other streaming services right now as, according to Deadline, the platforms try to balance a show’s viewership vs. what it would cost to renew it – and as we’ve seen with platforms like Starz and HBO Max, cost-effectiveness almost always wins out, leading to popular shows being canceled because renewing them would cost too much.
Seasons 1 and 2 of Warrior Nun, created by Simon Barry, are currently available to stream on Netflix. Barry, Stephen Hegyes, and David Hayter acted as the series’ executive producers, with Terri Hughes Burton as a co-executive producer and Amy Berg acting as a consulting producer.
