Communication has always been a central part of the online gaming experience. From the beginning of online console gaming, voice chat has been integral to the experience. Whether through Xbox Live groups or PlayStation parties, the core technology is all the same. Voice over IP has been at the forefront of online PC gaming for as long as possible. While services have fallen in and out of popularity over the years, many mainstays have arisen. Whether it’s through TeamSpeak, Skype, or now Discord, the technology has evolved. With console manufacturers seeing the value in adopting that community, PlayStation quickly put a sizable stake into Discord. With a new app just released earlier this year, the investment is going smoothly. Now, it seems that Microsoft is trying to jump onto the Discords train. Announced today is the new Xbox Discord app that releases for select insiders today, with more rolling out in the coming weeks.

When Do Xbox Insiders Gain Access To The Discord App?
While the news is great, many anticipated this move sooner or later. Seeing how both companies have had surface-level account integrations, many assumed that both platforms would receive support eventually. Thanks to the investment by Sony in 2021, it seems that their app was able to be released first successfully. Yet, what remains to be known is how long the Xbox beta will take before the app can release to all retail users. Seeing how the PlayStation app was available to beta users early on, a similar rollout is taking place. Regular Xbox users should be able to use the app within a few months.
