Earlier this year, a promising demonstration of Xbox 360 games being run through the cloud on a PC made it seem like there was a possibility that the console would offer some sort of backwards compatibility in the future. It looks like this may not be the case.
Albert Penello, a product planner for Microsoft, recently explained to Polygon that this type of backwards compatibility could be “really problematic”, and thus, we’ll likely not see this come to fruition on the new console.
“It’s really cool and really problematic,” says Penello. “It’s really super cool if you happen to have the world’s most awesome internet connection. It works way better than you’d expect it to.” Later in the interview, Penello says the cloud-based streaming is “one of the things where the network just has to get better before we can do it.”
