The Emmy’s took place last night, not the big Emmy’s full of actors and stars, the other Emmy’s that focuses on the technology surrounding television. Taking place at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, the 66th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards were a part of this week’s CES event. Presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the awards focus more on the technology of TV, rather than the content which it displays. The surprise winner this year was Microsoft’s Xbox One, which won the Emmy award for Television Enhancement Devices thanks to its many TV-focused features such as the OneGuide, and being able to seamlessly switch from gameplay to TV.
Of course gamers will remember the initial unveiling of the Xbox One and its TV-centric features as somewhat of a negative experience. Microsoft came out swinging with tons of TV apps and features that seemed interesting, but left gamers out in the cold. A refocused strategy and a ton of great games should have helped gamers to accept the Xbox One for the gaming powerhouse that it is by now, and maybe they can enjoy the TV elements a bit more.
